#5 Full steam ahead

The first controlled use of fire some 1.5 million years ago was an innovation that helped stone-age man survive and thrive. It is the controlled use of nuclear energy however that is the biggest advance in energy creation in that it is more sustainable than the burning fossil fuels. A virtually inexhaustible energy source that humans are likely to find more uses for in the future.

Symphony Supply Chain Buffer Management Software

Symphony is a suite of applications that integrates together to form a holistic TOC solution that interfaces with the ERP system of a company. The strength of all applications is their simplicity: they are easily deployed, learned and used. They direct the correct use of TOC and hence they streamline TOC work processes. The core of the application is the buffer management module.

Modules

Symphony - Procurement
For fast moving Raw Material (RM) - Applying TOC's replenishment principles of frequently ordering based on actual demand and dynamic buffer adjustments to optimize stock levels. For slow moving items - Applying Make-To-Order (MTO) buffer management.

Procurement management copes with two types of raw materials - fast movers and slow movers.

In a make-to-stock (MTS) environment, the response time to the market can be significantly reduced by managing the raw material based on replenishment principles. The fast movers' module main features are:

  • Identification of RM stock buffers that are in danger of depletion
  • Daily replenishment suggestions
  • Dynamic buffer adjustments
  • Process of on going improvement (POOGI)

In make-to-order (MTO) environment, there is a need to monitor all open purchase orders and be able to take corrective actions before they arrive late and endanger production. Therefore Symphony applies time-based buffer management principles and highlights orders that are about to be late.

Symphony - Shop floor/Production
Simplified Drum Buffer Rope (S-DBR) is the heart of shop floor management. The application considers the market as the constraint, publishes release material schedule and prioritizes orders on the floor both for make-to-order (MTO) and make-to-stock (MTS). The module main features are:

  • Unified MTS-MTO buffer penetration priority system
  • Rope violation detection
  • Planned load
  • Process of on going improvement (POOGI)
  • Throughput Value Days (TVD)
  • Plant calendar

Symphony - Distribution
Supports all kinds of TOC's distribution models. From dedicated products that are replenished directly from plant, to a multi-tier distribution model including plant warehouse, and regional warehouses.

This module is based also on the TOC replenishment principle of "receive daily consumption, react as frequent as possible" and dynamic buffer adjustments to optimize finished goods stock levels and guarantee availability.

Symphony supports many distribution schemes such as:

  • Dedicated products that are replenished directly from plant. No warehouse is involved
  • Standard products that are replenished from the plant warehouse. Shop floor reacts to the plant warehouse consumption.
  • Multi echelon - client sites are replenished from regional warehouses. Regional warehouses are replenished from the plant warehouse and the shop floor reacts to the plant warehouse
  • Hybrid environment of dedicated and standard products.

The Distribution module main features are:

  • Identification of stock buffers in the entire supply chain that are in danger of depletion
  • Daily replenishment suggestions to all sites.
  • Dynamic stock buffer adjustments.
  • Process of on going improvement (POOGI)
  • Throughput Value Days (TVD)

Technology
Symphony products are based on Microsoft .NET framework, coded in C# and work with Microsoft SQL Server. This technology guarantees a robust, scalable and maintainable system.
